Simple Computer Network Connection in a Ubuntu Desktop Linux



This is a simple guide about a computer network connection set-up and configuration using Ubuntu Desktop Linux. 

Here is a guidelines with a name of PC and IP addresses and the equipment needed.

1 - Switch
3 - Computer Desktop with a NIC (network interface card), fresh installation copy of Ubuntu Desktop
3 - LAN cable with a RJ45

Here is the label of a Computer.

- For 1st computer -  PC-1
Name: PC-1
IP Address: 192.168.1.2
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 

For 2nd computer - PC-2
Name: PC-2
IP Address: 192.168.1.3
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway:

For 3rd computer -  PC-3
Name: PC-3
IP Address: 192.168.1.4
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway:

Here is the configuration on network system in Ubuntu Desktop. Do this in a every computer.


1. From Desktop, click the icon with label name Dash home, in the search box, Type Network Connection then click the icon Network Connection.
2. Click the Wired tab, then click IPv4 Settings tab.
3. In the Method, select Manual and click Add to input the IP address, Netmask then click Save.
* In Default gateway leave as blank.
* In DNS servers and Search domains, leave as blank.

For testing, use ping tool whether the connection in every computer PC-1, PC-2, PC-3 is working.

1. In PC-1, go to Desktop and find and click the icon with lable Terminal and type ping 192.168.1.3. And if they show the reply message, the connection is working. Repeat ping to 192.168.1.4.
2. In PC-2, go to Desktop and find and click the icon with lable Terminal and type ping 192.168.1.2. And if they show the reply message, the connection is working. Repeat ping to 192.168.1.4.
3. In PC-3, go to Desktop and find and click the icon with lable Terminal and type ping 192.168.1.3. And if they show the reply message, the connection is working. Repeat ping to 192.168.1.2.
